Everyone wants quality and affordable LCD HDTV and all manufacturers say that their TVs are both of high quality and affordable. So is that mean all LCD HDTV out there worth buying? How does a customer choose the right LCD HDTV? Well the answer is it all depends on your needs. Will you use it to play games or an alternate computer monitor or just simply to watch tv programs? When you’re anxious to buy your first HDTV take a deep breath and relax. You’ll need a cool head to choose between all those brands and models.

Okay, let’s start. Some things to look for on an LCD HDTV are it’s maximum resolution, color depth, and refresh rates. The higher the numbers the better. First is the maximum resolution. Current LCD TV market mainly offers 720p and 1080p resolution. However, if you want the highest definition, that would be 1080p (1920×1080). This resolution is now coming onto more and more monitors, but it also comes with a higher price tag. You can clearly see the difference in image resolution between a 720p TV and a 1080p TV. So, don’t waste your money to buy cheaper yet lower resolution TVs only to become disenchanted with it in a couple of months later and then scoop your pocket again to get a 1080p HDTV.

Next is the color depth and refresh rates. You’ll want the highest possible color depth and refresh rates. High color depth means that the images will have natural colors. Red looks red, green looks green, black look pitch black instead of dark grey and white looks pure white instead of light yellowish color. High refresh rate is especially noticeable when you’re watching fast movements either in movies or games. The high refresh rate allows the image transition looking smooth.

So, now that you got the resolution, color depth and refresh rates taken care of it’s time to look at the other aspect for example the speaker. The built in speakers you’ll find in a LCD HDTV usually have so so quality. So if when buy it’s probably better to go to your local store and listen to the sound. Ask the seller to play an action dvd or something like that and lister for yourself. If you’re not really sure what a great speaker should sound like then you could try reading the online reviews for the TVs. Learning from other’s experience and opinions can make your buying decision a lot easier.

Other things you may want to consider before buying are the TV design (will it look good in the TV room?), whether it has a built-in Digital Tuner (so you can take advantage of the new Digital broadcast signals), is a wall mount included (so you can hang it on the bedroom wall) and other accessories. They may not be all that important but you sure want to get the best bang for your buck right?

The 46″ Sony Bravia KDL-46V2500 LCD HDTV is a great set just like the smaller 40″ 40V2500. The picture is excellent out of the box but some recommend turning off the vivid setting and set it to neutral and then tweak the HDTV to perfection. The colors are incredible and breathtaking. Playing video games with the Xbox 360 or PS3 is beautiful and watching Blu-Ray movies in 1080p is just jaw dropping. There is a reason why Sonys cost more and the difference in quality is worth the difference in price.

The price for the Sony Bravia KDL-46V2500 LCD HDTV has dropped considerably as of this review so it can now compete against other brands if you’re on a budget. If you’re hesitant to pay for the more expensive and elegant XBR models, then the V-Series is the model to get. The XBR definitely looks better aesthetically, but performance wise you will not notice much difference unless you’re an HDTV expert. The 46V2500 uses the same LCD panel as the XBR series.

Watching HD Sony Bravia KDL-46V2500 LCD HDTV set is amazing, but most programs have not made the leap to HD yet. However, standard display is not bad and watchable compared to other HDTVs where it is absolutely horrible to look at anything non-HD. This set should hold you over until you get HD programming or until most programs switch to 1080p.

There have been some complaints on “fogginess” or “clouds” when the TV is displaying dark scenes. Some people cannot stand it and it is a deal breaker for them, but some people can tolerate it and consider it only a minor annoyance that is outweighed by the stunning picture quality. This problem does not seem to be appearing on every KDL-46V2500 however because a lot of people haven’t noticed the problem. It has also been reported that the fogginess has been fixed on models manufactured after December 6th 2007 so you should be fine if you buy a brand new one now, but double check to make sure.

The internal sound from the KDL-46V2500 is nice and clear and very good for a TV which is rare. The menu is also nice and intuitive and the remote control is okay, but may feel a little cheap. You’ll most likely get a universal remote anyway. Who has time to juggle multiple remote controls?

If you plan to watch DVD’s on the Bravia KDL-46V2500 LCD HDTV, I suggest you get an up-converting DVD player like Sony’s DVP-NS77H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player with HDMI Output. The quality is so much better than regular DVD players and almost looks HD. I also suggest watching DVDs with widescreen format instead of fullscreen because the TV will distort and stretch the image and there are no settings around it.

Overall, the Sony Bravia KDL-46V2500 is a high quality LCD HDTV with jaw dropping visuals. Playing video games and watching movies will constantly wow you and your friends. If you’re looking for a great LCD TV at the right price, this set may be it. You’ll get Sony quality television with price that can compete with the Samsungs and Toshibas. I definitely recommend this.

The Vizio 32″ LCD HDTV cost around $500 or so, depending on where you buy it. I bought mine from Sam’s Club at around $520. I also purchased the wallmount for it. This is my first HDTV LCD TV that I have ever owned and I love it. It has dual HDMI output connections as well as VGA output connection to hook it to your PC or what not. I have hooked this up to my PC via DVI connection and the quality isn’t as good as I thought it would be, but still very good. If you get the perfect resolution set for this TV it would look flawless, especially with HDMI. The max resolution for the Vizio 32″ is 1366 x 768 resolution. The HDMI cables run about $100, thats why I have not hooked this up via HDMI yet.

I currently have Dishnetwork (Non-HD) connected to my TV. If you are far away the TV looks EXCELLENT. When you get closer is when you start to see more of the pixels, but this is obviously caused by not having DishNetwork HD, and HDMI cables hooked up. My personal opinion on this TV is that for the price, you can not beat $500 for a 32″ Hi-Definition TV. The TV has the capability to remove the base to allow mounthing on the wall. There are about 10 screws or so to fully mounth this TV to the wall. It was not much of a task at all. Pretty simple.

Here is a bit more information about what Outputs/Inputs the TV provides as well as size information:

InputsRF (F Connector for internal tuner): 1

HDMI with HDCP: 2

Analog Stereo Audio for HDMI Inputs: 1

Component YPbPr plus Stereo Audio: 2

Composite Video: 2

S-Video plus Stereo Audio: 1

Computer RGB plus Stereo Audio: 1

Service Port: 1

Outputs

Analog Audio out (RCA): 1

5.1 SPDIF Digital Optical Audio: 1

Headphone (Stereo Mini-Jack): 0

DimensionsCarton: 35″ W x 28″ H x 14.2″ D

Net: 31.4″ W x 23.3″ H x 10.4″ D

Without Stand: 31.4″ W x 22.1″ H x 3.9″ D

Certifications: CSA, CSA-US FCC Class B, IC, BETS-7

I would HIGHLY recommend the Vizio 32″ VX32L HDTV to any one wanting to purchase a HD LCD TV.

A few weeks ago, my friends and I were trying to decide at whose house we were going to watch a big game. My friend, Ken’s house has the advantage because it is located in the center. It is 5 miles from my home, 6 miles from Jim’s, and 12 miles from Bret and Sally. However, Ken is a new father so our viewing experience might be interrupted by the baby’s frequent crying.

Jim suggested that we watch it at Bret and Sally’s house. The problem was that they live on the outskirts so they are far from everyone. They do have a HDTV LCD TV, but they are horrible house cleaners. Since a few of us are allergic to mold, we don’t want our viewing of the game to be interrupted by severe allergic reactions.

We finally decided to watch the game at my house. I also have a HDTV LCD TV, but it is not quite as brand new and spiffy as Bret and Sally’s HDTV LCD TV. My friends probably want to watch the game at my house because I always serve the best snacks and there is plenty of room for everyone.

I purchased new speakers for my HDTV LCD TV because the day of the big game was at hand. The speakers added high definition surround sound to the high resolution image. My friends arrived early, so we had time for a beer run and some small talk. Finally, the hour of the big game was at hand. We all felt like we were part of the action as we watched the big image on the HDTV LCD TV. Our team was also ahead so our mood was quite lively.

The problem was that things can change pretty quickly in professional football. At the midway point of the game, our team was behind by seven points. As a result, we all cheered pretty loudly to support our team, as we watched the big image on the HDTV LCD TV. We were glad when it was time for the halftime break because we could run out and grab some more munchies.

Our team was fighting back by the time we got back. We were soon all hooting and hollering, while we watch the high definition image in glorious colors that saturate the television. The game was down to the line, but out team prevailed in the end.

LCD vs plasma HDTV – which is best? If you’re looking for a flat-screen, slim and sexy display, to watch HDTV, you have a choice of two technologies, LCD and gas plasma.

Each has benefits and disadvantages and so each is more appropriate in specific

circumstances.

Historically, the LCD vs plasma HDTV choice has been fairly simple. If you wanted a

flat-screen that was about 40in or bigger, you had to choose plasma, otherwise you

should choose LCD. However, as LCD technology improves, LCD HDTVs are getting

bigger and most of the major manufacturers expect the number of LCDs they

produce to grow steadily over the next few years while the number of plasmas will

decrease. However, if you’re looking for a flatscreen TV today, plasma still has a lot

to offer.

To understand the LCD vs plasma HDTV question, we need to look at the way the

two technologies work.

LCD

LCD HDTVs work by shining a light behind an LCD panel made up of a fixed number

of pixels. Each pixel is either red, blue or green and is switched on or off when a

voltage is applied to it. When voltage is applied to a pixel, it is switched off,

meaning that light can’t shine through it.

The main advantage of LCD vs plasma HDTV is that LCD panels don’t suffer from

what’s called burn-in. This is a feature of plasma TVs where they are used to watch

TV stations with logos permanently displayed on-screen or where they are used for

video gaming with games that have static images such as a cockpit on flight

simulators. The image literally ‘burns-in’ the screen meaning that even when the

image is not present you can still see a faint trace of it on screen. So for video

gamers in particular, LCD is a better choice than plasma.

Plasma

Plasma HDTVs have over a million chambers which house one or a combination of

gasses. When a voltage is applied to one of these chambers the gas ionizes and

emits ultra-violet light. This light strikes red, green or plue phophors coated on the

inside of the chamber and a pixel emits this color light.

Plasma HDTVs tend to have better contrast than LCDs because, even when a pixel

on an LCD panel is switched off it doesn’t block all the light coming through and

therefore the pixel isn’t completely black. Plasma HDTVs also tend to have a wider

viewing angle than LCDs, as on LCD HDTVs the contrast and colour of the image can

change when the screen is viewed from different angles.

LCD vs Plasma HDTV conclusion

Technology is changing rapidly, but for now (July 2004) it’s still true to say that at

sizes of 40in and above, plasma offers a less-expensive and generally better

solution. For screen-sizes less than 40in LCD is better. However, as LCD technology

improves and prices fall, this will change.

LCD is winning the race to be the dominant display technology for HDTV. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD (liquid crystal diode) TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion. LCD TV shipments rose a stronger than expected 52% year to year in the second quarter of 2008 to nearly 7.5 million units (79.8% of total HDTV sales).

The LCD screen on a LCD HDTV is a selective light filter. It does not in itself emit light, but selectively filters light passing through the display from the back. Most HDTVs include either a single sheet of luminescent plastic or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to provide the backlight. Both techniques are difficult to control.

Many consumers focus on screen resolution when selecting a High Def (HDTV) system. Is this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or 1020p? However, when an expert group, the SMPTE (Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers), recently ranked the importance of screen resolution, it ranked fourth. The SMPTE ranked contrast ratio, color saturation, color temperature and grayscale ahead of screen resolution in importance. The Imaging Science Foundation reached a similar conclusion. Backlighting is the key component to improvement in contrast ratio and grayscale.

It is important that an LCD system allows for adjustment of the level of backlighting, and preferably, performs this function automatically. This will improve the contrast of the picture. Also, a reduced backlight level will also reduce power consumption and extend lamp life, as the power used and lamp lifetime is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000 hour lifetime at 6 milliamps may only have a 30,000 hour lifetime if the current is 7 milliamps, just 1 milliamp higher (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

Another important factor in the choice of backlighting is the consideration of “blur”. Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response. Effective backlight engineering can reduce this significantly by strobing the backlighting, so that the individual pixels do not remain lit longer than needed. Examples of this technique include the Philips “Aptura” and the Samsung “LED Motion Plus”.

Sidelighting

With sidelighting, the backlight is located in the back of the LCD panel, and to each side to create panel illumination. To make the light more uniform, a light diffuser is located between the lamps and the rear of the optical filter module. Most LCD systems that use sidelighting use cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides a very bright white light. The lifetime of the lamps is usually between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).

The most important disadvantage is that the intensity of light cannot be varied locally, and sidelighting can look non-uniform. Some CCF lamps contain mercury. This is an ecological disadvantage.

The major drawbacks:

The intensity of light cannot be varied locally. This results in a lower contrast picture.
The light can be non-uniform.
Some CCF lamps contain mercury.

Conventional Backlighting

Most backlighting is performed with a single sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels can age (though improvements in this area have reduced this problem). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting uses colored phosphors to generate light. Displays using this technique can be thin and lightweight, and provide even light distribution.

The major drawbacks:

Limited life of 3,000 to 5,000 hours to half brightness (2-3 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).
The intensity of light cannot be varied locally.

LED Backlighting

LED backlighting uses a matrix of LEDs that can be controlled individually to offer very good control. In this configuration, a large number of LEDs are mounted uniformly behind the display. Brightness improvements in LEDs have made them more practical for backlighting. NEC pioneered this technique with their monitor, the 2180WG. Other companies, such as Samsung, have recently introduced versions of this technology. This should push prices down (the Samsung model cost less than 1/3 the price of a comparable NEC monitor).

This system offers local dimming technology and can achieve 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. True actual black levels (the “Holy Grail” of LCD) are attainable by shutting off a pixel’s light source. This can eliminate the grayish black picture typical of many LCD HDTVs. Groups of LEDs can be locally controlled to produce more light, increasing the brightness when necessary.

The problem with conventional white LEDs is that their spectrum is not ideal for photographic reproduction because they are basically blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor on top. Their color spectrum has two peaks, one at blue and another at yellow. White LEDs that are based on a group of red, green and blue LEDs are ideal for the RGB color filters of an LCD and can result in the most saturated colors. Sony’s “Triluminos” LED backlight system is an example of this technique.

Sometimes, these HDTVs have a row of LEDs across the top and bottom of the display. This improves the brightness and color reproduction, and enables almost complete uniformity across the display.

LED backlights are much more efficient that alternative techniques. And since the LED backlight waste less energy, less heat is generated, that must be managed with air conditioning. LED backlights offer a long operating lifetime of more than 50,000 hours (more than 25 years of use at a rate of 5 hours a day).

LED backlit systems may not show well in a typical retail environment. Typically, the screens are somewhat reflective in order to achieve the high contrast ratio, and subsequently, a brightly lit showroom may not flatter this technology. In a more typical less-lit environment, this problem should not be as noticeable.

Engineering Concerns

The electrical engineering is simpler with LED backlights. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCF) require high AC voltages (1,500 VAC) at startup, and operating voltages of 700 VAC or more. When the lamp is new it may take much less voltage to start, but with age the voltage requirements usually increase, complicating a designer’s problem. An electroluminescent panel requires a voltage of about 100 VAC @ 400 Hertz.

A power inverter (to generate VAC) is needed for both CCF and electroluminescent panels to operate with a DC power supply. This is a significant expense, in cost, size, and weight of the system. The best inverter for this application permits the output voltage to automatically increase as the lamps age, extending the useful life of the lamps.

LCD systems with LED backlighting utilize low voltage DC, usually 12 or 24 VDC. This results in a smaller, simpler, and more reliable system. LED backlit systems must be well cooled or their performance can suffer. The LEDs generate less heat than CCF lamps, but the heat is very concentrated. Operating at high temperatures reduces the LED lifetime and shifts their light spectrum, while reducing output luminance.

OLED

A new technology that you will be hearing about in the future is Organic LED (OLED). This technology has a completely different backlight technology, it doesn’t need one. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system. An OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display. The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED.

Sony introduced an 11″ HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The new 11″ Sony TV is called the “XEL-1″. It’s very thin (1/10″) and currently sells for $2500. Samsung demonstrated a 31″ OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution at a tradeshow in Asia in November. LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic), and others are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this extremely promising technology. Toshiba has plans to sell a 30″ OLED display in 2009. Samsung has announced they will sell large screen OLED HDTVs in 2010.

OLED displays have already been used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

In theory, OLED displays can be more inexpensively manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. Remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced.

Summary

LCD HDTVs and monitors with LED array backlighting are now the approach of choice because they exhibit better image quality while saving power. The ability to locally control light output is key to achieving high contrast ratios.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 46″ 1080p LCD HDTV is an elegant looking set with its piano black frame. The black finish is reflective, but not annoyingly shiny like a mirror as long as you don’t put it directly in front of a light source. It’s a serious looking LCD HDTV with its black finish and anti-glare screen. Not only does it look nice aesthetically, but it looks awesome where it counts the most, the picture.

The picture, like the Sony Bravia V2500 models, looks amazing. No annoying glares will ruin your viewing experience and the fogging that hit some of the owners with the V2500 model is gone. If there are any, you must be unlucky. The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV has a 60 Hz refresh rate while the higher end models have 120 Hz so the motion blurring will not be as smooth as the more expensive sets. That doesn’t mean it’s blurry though. It’s still pretty smooth during fast action sequences and you probably won’t be able to tell anyway when playing HD content.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV up-scales 480i standard definition content with its Reality Creation Multi Function v1.0 technology and you can see that it truly helps make SD stuff less horrible than it otherwise should be. This basically means watching standard programming is good, but not at the level you’re used to when watching with a CRT, but also not as bad as many other LCD TVs.

The black and the contrast is good unlike what has been expected of LCDs. The colors are rich and the picture comes to life more so than other LCD HDTVs. Side by side with the Samsung or Sharp, the Sony looked better. In fact it can even compete with some of the plasma TVs out there. Just switch to normal mode and not use vivid mode and make some tweaks from there to your liking and the image will be near perfect. Try sharpening the image and increasing the black.

Configuring the settings in the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV is a breeze with the highly regarded XMB menu system that’s also in the PS3. Speaking of the PS3, watching blu-ray on the KDL-46V3000 is simply stunning. If you don’t have a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player, you need to get one if you’re getting an HDTV. HD-DVD is dead.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV does not have PIP or picture in picture, but it does have P&P or picture & picture. You can play video from two input sources at the same time, but only from HDMI, TV tuner, and video on the left side of the TV and component on the right. That means no watching HDMI & HDMI at the same time. It’s not a deal breaker since the picture quality is way up there.

Sound quality is good should you choose not to invest in a home theater surround sound system, but it does lack some oomph in the bass department. It’s much better than many LCD panels out there considering how small the piano black frame is.

I recommend the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV if you don’t want to spend a few extra Ben Franklins on the XBR4 and you don’t want the older, but still excellent KDL-46V2500. You can’t go wrong with this choice and it’s one of the best bangs for the buck.
